The first time I took my Southern wife to my childhood home in Indiana for the holidays, she told me she felt like she was stepping into a Hallmark Christmas movie.
Not only was our house dressed to the nines with holiday garb, but there were the themed Christmas activities too. The cookie decorating. Drinking Mom’s peppermint martinis or Dad’s homemade holiday brew around the euchre table. My mother’s bestowal of that year’s ornaments, each custom-made to commemorate a moment her children experienced that year. The decorating of the tree with decades of accumulated ornaments, each a symbol, rich with meaning, echoing back to us its own story...
